Liam’s Journey

(25 mins)

2025 Science Fiction

WHO AM I?

The story explores themes of identity, conflict between technology and humanity, racial tension, and the continuous search for self-meaning

The concept of Liam’s Journey began with a simple idea: if a person is continuously implied by others to be non-human or abnormal while being observed, how would the thoughts and perceptions of both the gazer and the observed person change? This idea stemmed from my relocation from the East to the West, resulting in a transition from a mainstream social identity to a marginalized one. This shift in social identity prompted me to deeply reflect on personal value and meaning.

Building on this, I met my producer Ziyang Jiang and Mubarak Haruna who is also the lead actor. We both believe that the recognition of identity and self is closely connected to society. Together, we have integrated the historical social discrimination faced by minority groups—including a series of dehumanizing processes driven by religion and societal norms—the identity loss resulting from the marginalization of minorities in American mainstream culture, and other social and class conflicts into this story.
